Translational research is research aimed at translating the results of research into something that benefits humans directly. This workstream focuses on creating patient-centred, transparent systems (or methodologies) for surgical innovation.
Our research has previously identified that current systems for surgical innovation are inadequate: understanding of adverse events is insufficient, patients aren’t given enough information, and sometimes their experiences are poor.
We are working with surgeon innovators to develop, pilot and refine our methodologies to create a safe, transparent, and comprehensive innovation life cycle.
Improving how we identify innovation and incremental modifications will improve informed consent. It will also reduce harm to patients, prevent the widespread use of innovation before it is evaluated and stop inappropriate use of harmful or ineffective practices.
